Chicago residents have
faced an exceptionally deadly Summer this year — 123 people were shot and killed, twice the amount of US soldier casualties in Iraq over the same period.
Throughout 2008, murder rates in Chicago have risen. In July Illinois governor Rod Blagojevich said he was

It's back to school day for everyone from Belgian princesses to my mom (Princess Laetitia of Belgium, pictured) but not for hundreds of Chicago public school students
expected to skip classes today. They're protesting the financial divide in the Illinois public school system.
Packed classrooms, old textbooks, and a dearth of technology tips the scale between schools who have and schools who ain't got it.

Chicago-based designer
Summer Thornton calls herself a "personal stylist for the home," and this apt description fits her perfectly. Concentrating mostly in ceramics during college, she shapes a home — an 1890's Lincoln Park condo, a North Shore mansion, a down-state country home — much like she would a clay pot, infusing it with color and texture and then sending it off to the kiln, ready to stand the test of everyday life. It's no surprise that she can make a Chicago high-rise and a country cottage look equally charming: she is rooted in both.

Philadelphia just became another major US city to hit a connection snag in their plan to offer citywide free Wi-Fi. Earthlink, the private company working with Philly, has
just announced its intention to pull the figurative plug on Philly's operating project. Why the pull-out.

Wednesday night we watched as the
second cheftestant left the Top Chef house. And while Valerie Bolon may never look at blinis the same, she was able to look back and cherish the time she spent on the show. Yesterday afternoon I got to speak with her about her experience.
